Unanimous UN Approval: Colombia Welcomes Security Council Resolution 2833 to Extend Verification Mandate

The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2833 at its headquarters in New York, officially extending the mandate of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia through October 31, 2027. Colombian diplomatic authorities warmly welcomed the consensus, highlighting the international community’s continued backing of peace and security efforts across the country.

The renewed resolution establishes a streamlined operational scope tailored directly to core priorities. Under Resolution 2833, the UN mission will concentrate its field resources primarily on two essential pillars: verifying the socio-economic and political reintegration of former peace agreement signees, and monitoring territorial security guarantees for vulnerable rural communities and ex-combatants.

By refocusing the UN’s responsibilities, national authorities will manage broader development programs directly while relying on international experts to oversee security and compliance. Diplomatic representatives at the UN praised Colombia’s national ownership of the process, emphasizing that this collaborative adjustment ensures a more focused and effective international presence grounded in local security realities
