Why is Guatemala’s Public Ministry trying to contact actor Juan David Restrepo?

During his visit to Guatemala, Colombian actor Juan David Restrepo spoke about an alarming statistic, highlighting that there are more than 190,000 missing children in the country, a figure that has generated shock and concern both nationally and internationally. «I don’t know if it’s a good morning with all the bad news we wake up to,» Restrepo said in an Instagram video, where he shared his concern after researching historical data about Guatemala. «Imagine that in Guatemala, there is an alarming figure of missing children. We are talking about more than 190,000 missing children. It’s quite concerning, something I don’t know how a country can be at peace when 190,000 children are missing and no one knows where they are. (…) I mean, we’re talking about 2.5% of the population missing in Guatemala, and they are children,» he questioned. The actor’s statements quickly went viral, sparking a debate about the magnitude of the issue and the response from the authorities. In response to the viral message, Guatemala’s Public Ministry directly replied to Restrepo through a comment on his post: «We need to communicate with you, we sent you a direct message.» This response from the Public Ministry has raised even more questions: What did they discuss privately? What additional information does the actor have? What actions will the authorities take in response to this grave situation? It is important to note that the disappearance of children not only represents an individual tragedy for each affected family but also a significant social issue. The possible causes behind these disappearances are varied and complex, including human trafficking, illegal adoption, and sexual and labor exploitation, among others, which may involve the United States, as these more than 190,000 missing minors were recorded during the period of open border policies promoted by President Joe Biden. In light of this situation, it is essential for Guatemalan authorities to take urgent and decisive measures to investigate each case thoroughly, strengthen child protection mechanisms, and ensure the safety of children in this Central American country.
