The Cundinamarca Regional Autonomous Corporation (CAR) and the National Police carried out an environmental control operation on the department’s roads that made it possible to stop the illegal transportation of guadua, a strategic forest species due to its ecological and productive value.

The action took place on the highway that connects Fusagasugá with the municipality of Arbeláez, where the authorities intercepted a truck that was moving guadua without having the permits required by environmental regulations. During the inspection it was evident that the shipment did not have authorization for use or the safe conduct required for its transport.

In total, about 100 yards of Guadua angustifolia were seized, with an approximate volume of 2.3 cubic meters. This was confirmed by Érika Álvarez, director of the Sumapaz regional of the CAR, who explained that the seizure was carried out by the Environmental Protection Group of the National Police upon verifying the absence of endorsement from the environmental authority.

The plant material remained in the custody of the Sumapaz Regional Directorate and was subsequently transferred to the Flora Care and Assessment Center of the CAR, where its destination will be defined in accordance with the technical and environmental guidelines. Meanwhile, the person responsible for the transport was placed at the disposal of the competent authorities and the respective environmental sanctioning process began.

The CAR recalled that the use and commercialization of products derived from guadua require prior authorization, due to the importance of this species in carbon capture, water regulation and its sustainable use in sectors such as construction and industry. Likewise, they stressed that any mobilization of biodiversity specimens in the first degree of transformation must be supported by the Single National Online Safeconduct (SUNL).

Environmental authorities insisted that these controls seek to protect the natural resources of Cundinamarca and prevent the indiscriminate exploitation of species that play a key role in ecosystems, while reiterating the call to comply with current regulations to avoid sanctions and environmental damage.
