President Gustavo Petro requested the resignation of his Minister of Justice, Eduardo Montealegre, who presented his resignation from office irrevocably. The departure of the former prosecutor occurs just days after filing the controversial bill to convene a national constituent assembly, one of the president’s flagship initiatives.

Although the resignation was accepted by Montealegre, the letter addressed to President Petro, known through this medium, exposes tensions and a strong internal confrontation. Montealegre argued that his departure was due to his need to resume his rights as a “victim of Uribe” to prevent the former president’s acts from “going unpunished,” and insisted on his duty to go to international courts.

However, the former minister escalated his criticism by directly pointing out political figures in the Government. In a message that shows deep fractures within the ruling party, Montealegre attacked Attorney General Gregorio Eljach, referring to him as part of “the most corrupt political class in Colombia” and questioning the support he supposedly received from “sectors of the Historical Pact that claim to promote transparency.”

Montealegre also issued a direct warning to the president: “Take good care of yourself: in the Palace there are traitors who lurk with dangerous daggers. A hug,” he concluded, suggesting the presence of disloyalty in the circle close to the president.

Montealegre’s resignation also occurs in the midst of a public dispute with prosecutor Eljach, with whom he exchanged complaints for alleged participation in politics. Political analysts have interpreted that Petro’s request for resignation is the result of the tension generated by this dispute, which was putting the Government’s legislative agenda at risk. With the departure of Montealegre, President Petro must look for a new minister to assume responsibility for the portfolio and lead the controversial proposal of the constituent assembly.
