Tension between Washington and Caracas escalated again this Wednesday after US President Donald Trump confirmed that his country’s forces detained an oil tanker in waters near Venezuela. The announcement was made during a meeting with business leaders at the White House, where he highlighted that it was a large vessel.

Trump underscored the magnitude of the operation by stating, “We just seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, a large, very large oil tanker, in fact, the largest oil tanker that has ever been seized,” a statement that immediately garnered international attention. Hours earlier, the Bloomberg agency had reported the news, citing sources familiar with the operation, and indicating that the ship was under sanctions from Washington.

The seizure represents a new blow to Venezuela’s already limited oil export capacity and could further discourage shipping companies that transport Venezuelan crude oil, given the risk of facing sanctions or punitive measures by the US government.

One more chapter in the bilateral confrontation

In recent months, the Trump administration has intensified its pressure strategy against the government of Nicolás Maduro, which it accuses of maintaining international criminal networks, allegations that Caracas categorically rejects. At the same time, US forces have expanded their presence in the Caribbean and the Pacific under the argument of combating drug trafficking, actions that include the destruction of vessels and military operations against illegal organizations.

So far, no details have been revealed about the identity of the intercepted tanker, the flag under which it was sailing or the exact point where the seizure occurred.

While the exchanges of statements continue, the confiscation of the oil tanker adds a new episode to the already complex relationship between the United States and Venezuela, fueling diplomatic concern in Latin America and the international community.
