The controversy over the economic emergency decreed by the National Government added a new chapter this Wednesday, December 24, after former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez announced that the Democratic Center will present a protection action to stop the immediate effects of the measure promoted by President Gustavo Petro.

As Uribe explained through his social networks, the protection will be filed by the political community headed by his presidential candidate and senator Paloma Valencia, considering that the decree represents an excess of functions and a direct impact on the pockets of Colombians.

The former president assured that this judicial remedy is, for now, the only mechanism available to try to stop the economic emergency, because the Constitutional Court will only begin to study the issue once the judicial vacancy ends, scheduled for mid-January.

Uribismo warns that, while the high court takes office, the Executive would have free rein to issue decrees with the force of law, including possible tax adjustments and new economic burdens that could come into force from the beginning of 2026.

The economic emergency decree was announced by the Government after the collapse of the financing bill in Congress, which sought to cover a budget gap close to $15 billion pesos.

For the Executive, the measure is necessary to guarantee fiscal stability; However, different political and legal sectors have indicated that the constitutional requirements to resort to this exceptional mechanism are not met.

Although the Constitutional Court ruled out holding extraordinary sessions to review the decree, the legal and political debate promises to escalate in the coming weeks.
