On a day marked by the capture of Nicolás Maduro, US President Donald Trump has redirected his rhetorical offensive towards the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro. During his recent appearances after the operation in Venezuela, Trump toughened his accusations, directly linking the head of state of Colombia with the manufacturing and massive export of narcotics to the United States.
Direct accusations of “drug factories”
The Republican president did not limit himself to criticizing Colombia’s security policies, but also claimed to have evidence of the existence of industrial production centers operated under the shadow of the Colombian government.
“He has factories, he has industries where he produces this drug. He is making cocaine and sending it to the United States. He does have to watch his ass,” Trump said, raising the tone of the threat to a personal and direct level.

Trump stressed that his administration has identified at least three large manufacturing plants in Colombian territory and warned that any nation that produces or traffics drugs to the United States is now a potential target of military attacks, “not necessarily just Venezuela.”
Colombia in the Pentagon’s sights
Trump’s warning comes in a context of almost total diplomatic rupture:
End of cooperation: The United States has already cut economic aid and suspended intelligence collaboration with Colombia.
Qualification of “thug”: Trump has publicly called Petro a “thug” and a “troublemaker,” accusing him of leading his country into a “death trap.”
Preventive attacks: The American president justified the aggressiveness of his words by citing that the cartels are “waging a war” against the American people and that there will be “no refuge or forgiveness” for those who protect them.
