What seemed like a relationship broken by the diplomatic tensions last Sunday has taken a 180 degree turn. This Friday, January 9, it was confirmed that the meeting between President Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump already has an official date: it will be during the first week of February at the iconic White House, in Washington DC

The American president himself was in charge of breaking the news through his social network Truth, with a message that has brought the confrontation down: “I am sure that it will work very well for Colombia and the United States”Trump wrote.

This announcement comes just two days after a “constructive” phone call where both leaders laid the foundations for a bilateral cooperation agenda, leaving behind the scuffles that kept regional diplomacy in suspense.

The Colombian Embassy in the United States welcomed the tone of the exchange and assured that diplomatic channels are already working at full speed in preparations for the meeting.

It is expected that tough but necessary topics will be addressed at the work table: the fight against drug trafficking, the immigration crisis and, of course, the new political reality of Venezuela after the capture of Nicolás Maduro, where Petro seeks to play a mediator role in the face of the Trump administration.

Trump expressed his gratitude for the importance that the Colombian government has given to this meeting, ensuring that it will be “very beneficial” to de-escalate tensions.
