A serious train accident shook the municipality of Duitama, Boyacá this Saturday, January 17, leaving a pregnant woman dead and at least three people injured. The incident occurred in the morning, when a train operated by the FerreoBelen Consortium suffered the decoupling of two cars that ended up out of control, dragging a private vehicle in the Hospital Glorieta.

According to preliminary information from local authorities, the cars, loaded with concrete blocks, separated from the locomotive during a routine operation and moved without brakes along the track that crosses urban sectors of the city. The first crash occurred in the Market Square area, where only material damage was reported. However, the danger intensified upon reaching the Hospital Roundabout, where the cars violently impacted a car occupied by a family.

The fatal victim was a 26-year-old pregnant woman. Her husband and five-year-old son were injured and taken to Duitama Regional Hospital. According to medical reports, the minor has multiple multiple traumas and is stable, while the adult remains under supervision after receiving care for various injuries.

In addition, an assistant to the train operator was also injured and remains under medical evaluation. The relief agencies, including the Civil Defense, Firefighters, Police and Prosecutor’s Office personnel, responded to the emergency immediately, secured the area and carried out the removal of the victim’s body.

The Mayor’s Office of Duitama expressed its deep regret for the loss of the woman and her baby, and assured that exhaustive investigations will be carried out to clarify the facts. Among the planned actions are the review of security cameras, the holding of inter-institutional working groups with the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) and the adoption of administrative measures against the FerreoBelen Consortium, responsible for the railway operation.

The tragedy has generated shock in the community, which has turned to support the affected family, while the authorities continue with the investigation and security work.
