The Attorney General’s Office managed to prosecute Carlos Alberto López, a primary school teacher at a school in Leticia. The teacher is being investigated for having sexually abused several of his underage students and was charged with the crime of aggravated sexual acts with a minor under 14 years of age. Despite the accusation, López did not accept the charges.

The defendant must comply with the security measure in the prison while the investigation against him progresses.

Abuse of Authority and Trust

The seriousness of the events lies in the fact that Professor López is accused of taking advantage of his position of authority and the trust placed in him by the educational community to attack his students.

The victims identified so far by the Prosecutor’s Office are four girls and one boy, aged between 6 and 9 years. The abuses would have been perpetrated during the months of September and October of the current year.

Victims’ Stories

The case came to light thanks to the bravery of the minors themselves. The victims participated in a sexual crime prevention day organized by the educational center, where they reported the attacks they allegedly suffered at the hands of the teacher.

Their stories indicated that Professor López used his status as an educator and the authority he exercised over them to carry out acts against their sexual training.

In response to the complaints, the CTI and the National Police gathered the necessary evidence and proceeded to capture the accused. A prosecutor from the Children and Adolescents Unit (UENNA) presented him before a guarantee control judge and charged him with a serious crime.

Despite the compelling evidence presented by the Prosecutor’s Office, Professor López maintains his declaration of innocence by not accepting the charges against him.
