Venezuela’s airspace is experiencing notable “loneliness” after the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a stern warning, citing a “worsening security situation and increased military activity” in the country.

The FAA alert, issued on Friday, November 21, recommended commercial airlines “exercise caution” or “avoid the area” of the Maiquetía Flight Information Region. This recommendation unleashed a wave of cancellations and diversions.

Major international airlines such as Iberia, Avianca, Latam and TAP immediately announced the cancellation of their flights to and from Venezuela. As a result, flight tracking maps show how international routes have modified their trajectory so as not to fly over Venezuelan territory, leaving the airspace noticeably unoccupied.

The situation occurs in the midst of an escalation of tension with the United States, marked by the military deployment in the Caribbean, and forces airlines to prioritize the safety of their passengers. Colombian aviation authorities also asked their airlines to analyze the impact of the alert on their operations.
