The event, recorded on the night of November 26 within the North Canton, shook the Army and generated a wave of unresolved questions. According to the authorities, Captain Pablo Andrés Masmela Zapata would have murdered Second Lieutenant María Camila Mora Mahecha and then take his own life.
With the passage of time, new details have become known that deepen the uncertainty. The Army commander, General Luis Emilio Cardozo, revealed in an interview with Noticias Caracol that the weapon with which Masmela apparently shot the second lieutenant several times before committing suicide was found in the vehicle.
But the most disturbing thing happened later: during the search of the captain’s room, investigators found two other weapons, which did not correspond to the official equipment.
“We are in the process of tracking and verification,” General Cardozo indicated, highlighting the need to clarify how these weapons entered the North Canton and why they were in the officer’s possession.

The case took a key turn when it was confirmed that a third person was inside the car at the time of the events. It would be a second lieutenant, a companion of the victim, who became the main witness. According to what was revealed, the woman would have witnessed the moment in which Masmela took out the gun and shot Mora Mahecha at least five times.

Early hypotheses suggest personal motivations, including possible infidelity, although none have been officially confirmed. For now, the Army insists that it continues to carry out investigations in coordination with the Prosecutor’s Office.
In a statement, the institution regretted the tragedy and explained that the uniformed personnel in the military complex reacted after hearing several detonations.
It still remains to be answered who allowed the entry of unofficial weapons, what happened minutes before inside the car and what were the reasons that led to this fatal outcome.
