The Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellín has established itself as the undisputed epicenter of the great definitions of Colombian football.
With the most recent classification of DIM to the final of the BetPlay Cup and the almost certain classification of Atlético Nacional, the stage is consolidated as the home of the finals.
In the last five years, the “Colossus of 74” has witnessed an impressive total of 12 finals, a figure that underlines the validity and greatness of the two most representative teams of the capital of Antioquia.
This golden streak has ensured that, uninterruptedly since 2020, the stadium has hosted at least one final per season, reaffirming its status as the country’s main sporting venue for crowning moments.
This flow of finals is the result of the successful campaigns of Independiente Medellín and Atlético Nacional.
DIM has played four finals in this period: three in the BetPlay League and one in the BetPlay Cup.
For its part, Atlético Nacional, the club with the most honors in the country, has taken its fans to eight finals at the Atanasio and will probably reach the ninth.
For now there are three in the League, three in the BetPlay Cup and two in the Super League. This competitive intensity has made the city live an atmosphere of constant excitement, where the finals are a tradition every semester.
The recent history of titles in these finals has been notably more favorable for the ‘purslane’ team.
In these last five years, Atlético Nacional has celebrated seven different titles, consolidating its hegemony.
These include two Leagues, three BetPlay Cups and two Super Leagues, many of which were defined, at least partially, at home.
The Atanasio Girardot: The temple of the Colombian Soccer finals
In contrast, Independiente Medellín has managed to lift a BetPlay Cup, demonstrating that both clubs have had the opportunity to celebrate in front of their passionate fans.
The tradition of finals at the Atanasio shows no signs of stopping in 2025. The stadium has already hosted the SuperLiga final at the beginning of the year, and the BetPlay League final in the middle of the year.
At the end of the year, thanks to DIM, it will host the final of the BetPlay Cup. And the prospect of more big stories is imminent.
All because Atlético Nacional is on the verge of qualifying for the final of the BetPlay Cup, which would set up an exciting ‘mountain’ final against its backyard rival.
Meanwhile, the two giants from Antioquia have entered the semi-final home runs of the BetPlay League at a great time.
Both teams will look hard for the possibility of adding another final to their tally, and of course, to the impressive record of Atanasio Girardot.
If the projections come true, the “Colossus of 74” is preparing to continue being, for a long time to come, the cathedral and the “House of the Finals” of Colombian professional football.
