The Regional Autonomous Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) made an urgent call to mayors and municipal authorities to activate their contingency plans before the arrival of the first dry season of 2026, following recent reports from IDEAM that predict a decrease in rainfall and an increase in temperatures in the region.
The general director of the CAR, Alfred Ignacio Ballesteros, pointed out that the corporation is ready to provide technical support and advice to municipalities, with the aim of strengthening disaster risk management and guaranteeing a timely response to possible emergencies. According to the official, it is key that municipal risk management committees, relief bodies and public and private companies are attentive to climatic conditions, to prevent and mitigate the impacts of the dry season.
Among the main concerns associated with reduced rainfall are the increased likelihood of forest fires, increased temperatures and decreased water availability. For this reason, the CAR places special emphasis on the need to control human activities that can generate fire, reinforce the capabilities of fire departments and Civil Defense, and maintain updated threat maps that allow quick and effective decisions to be made.

Regarding water supply, Ballesteros recommended that municipalities review the capacity of their aqueducts and plan strategies to guarantee water supply to the population, considering peak consumption hours and the needs of productive activities.

In addition, he highlighted the importance of promoting rational use of the resource and preparing alternatives such as underground sources or supply through tank trucks, as well as carrying out preventive actions against diseases related to water contamination, such as dengue. The cleaning of rainwater collection systems, sewers and river channels is also part of the necessary preventive measures.

The director of the CAR recalled that advance preparation is essential to avoid critical situations such as those experienced in 2024, when Bogotá and several municipalities in Cundinamarca faced forest fires and severe water rationing due to the dry season and the decrease in levels in the regulation systems.
Alfred Ballesteros concluded that coordination between municipal authorities, relief bodies and the CAR is the best way to anticipate risks, minimize damage and guarantee that the region is ready to face the conditions of the upcoming dry season.
