The Attorney General’s Office announced permanent monitoring of the National University of Colombia after the Council of State declared the annulment of the election of Leopoldo Múnera as rector.

According to the Public Ministry, the measure seeks to guarantee an orderly institutional transition, as well as verify that no new administrative irregularities occur.

The Attorney General’s Office reiterated that the objective is to accompany the entire process after the ruling in a technical and preventive manner.

In a statement, the entity explained that the ruling made it clear that the Higher University Council exceeded its functions, violated due process and ignored the limits established by article 41 of the CPACA.

“The ruling is categorical (…) The Attorney General’s Office warns that these events constitute a real and verifiable disciplinary risk for those who participated in actions without jurisdiction,” stated the Public Ministry.

Preventive surveillance will include the review of the measures adopted by the University to correct the irregularities indicated and avoid dilatory decisions.

This special control becomes relevant after Senator Paloma Valencia asked the Attorney General’s Office to guarantee compliance with the ruling, warning about the possibility that the Superior Council would try to appoint an internal rector to delay the transition.

In her letter, the congresswoman requested urgent actions to ensure that Leopoldo Múnera hands over command without obstacles to José Ismael Peña, who has already stated that he will serve as rector as soon as the ruling becomes final. Following the decision of the Council of State, the institution faces a new chapter of reorganization and public scrutiny.
