in the city of Providence, leaving at least two people dead and eight more injured. The incident occurred near the Barus & Holley building, home of the School of Engineering and the Department of Physics, while students were taking final exams.
According to American media, the shooting occurred in the afternoon, and the alert immediately reached the students through internal notifications: “Close the doors, silence the phones and remain hidden until further notice.” It was reported that there was an active shooter and that local authorities, along with Brown Police, were on the scene attempting to control the situation.
At first, the arrest of a suspect was reported, but the authorities later clarified that no person was in custody and that the search for the person responsible continues. Providence Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said it was a man dressed in black, although no details have yet been given about how he entered the campus nor the weapon used has been located.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that the injured were taken to nearby hospitals. Although they are in critical condition, their condition is stable.

The affected building, Barus & Holley, houses 117 laboratories, 150 offices, 15 classrooms and 29 laboratories, so the shooting had a significant impact on the university community.
This fact adds to the worrying statistics of shootings in academic institutions in the United States, where this year alone more than 70 episodes of armed violence have been recorded in schools and universities, according to local media.
