The tax reform of the National Government was practically buried this Friday, November 21 after 10 of the 17 senators of the Third Commission filed the archival presentation.

The decision, supported by a solid majority, leaves the initiative with which the Executive sought to raise more than $16 billion pesos in 2026 on the brink of failure.

Although 10 signatures appear in the document, legislative sources assure that at least 12 congressmen are determined to vote against the project, which reflects the deep distance between the Government and the benches that at the time were open to dialogue.

For the Minister of the Interior, Armando Benedetti, the collapse puts the payment of the foreign debt and the economic stability of the country at risk.

For Cepeda, one of the promoters of the file, the reform hit “the pockets of the lower and middle classes,” especially due to the carbon tax that would impact the price of gasoline, directly affecting the $12 million motorcyclists who circulate in the country.

If it officially collapses next Tuesday, the Government would bet on the so-called “plan B”: an alternative project by representative Álvaro Monedero that seeks to raise nearly 6 billion pesos and has already passed its first debate in the Chamber.
