A new control operation in one of the most critical points of Chapinero revealed serious failures in waste management by several establishments in the Hippies sector. The intervention, led by the Local Mayor’s Office, ended with four summonses and multiple calls for attention to merchants who, according to the authorities, are contributing to the disorder and health problems in the area.
During the inspection, officials from the Local Mayor’s Office and the Government Secretariat visited seven establishments, where they found everything from waste taken out hours before the collection service to businesses that operated without the complete documentation required by current regulations. Three stores were sanctioned for failing to comply with garbage disposal schedules; the fourth, due to administrative irregularities.
But the operation did not only focus on sanctions. The authorities showed that many of the premises do not have adequate spaces to store waste, which is generating the proliferation of pests, bad odors and a visible deterioration of the environment. For this reason, strict warnings were given about the need to have storage rooms or, at a minimum, properly closed containers.

The local mayor, Catherine Chaves Hernández, was emphatic that these controls will not stop. “The Hippies sector is one of the most affected by bad practices in waste management. We will continue to intervene every week, not only to sanction, but to demand co-responsibility. The recovery of public space is not negotiable,” he said.
The Mayor’s Office recalled that the collection service in Chapinero operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 6:00 pm and reiterated the call to merchants and residents to comply with the schedules and report violations to Line 195, option 8, a channel enabled for complaints about waste, pruning and debris management.
