Minute30.com .- After the first round electoral contest, Chile is preparing for new voting after none of the presidential candidates achieved an absolute majority in the elections held this Sunday, November 16.
Chileans will return to the polls on December 14 to define the next president between the two candidates with the most votes: Jeannette Jara and José Antonio Kast.
Nearly 15 million citizens were called to vote in this mandatory electoral process. The results were close, leaving the left-wing candidate, Jeannette Jara, in the lead with 26.8% of the votes. In second place, Republican José Antonio Kast obtained 23.9%.
Candidate Profiles
The contenders represent opposite poles of the Chilean political spectrum:
Jeannette Jara, left-wing candidate, is a lawyer and served as former Minister of Labor during the Administration of current President Gabriel Boric. It has the support of the ruling party.
José Antonio Kast, of the Republican Party, is the great representative of the Chilean extreme right, a role that he has consolidated since the 2021 elections.
The Key to Alliances
Currently, attention is focused on how the political board will move. We are waiting for the other six candidates who participated in the first round to opt for one of the two finalists. The agreements and support that Jara and Kast reach will be crucial, since the alliances could tip the final balance in favor of one of them in the December vote.
