Mobility in the west of the Colombian capital is seriously compromised during the morning of this Thursday, February 12. A monumental traffic jam occurred at the height of Highway 40, due to a large mobilization of recyclers moving along the road in an East-West direction.
The protesters, who advance slowly but steadily, have generated a traffic jam that affects thousands of citizens trying to connect with the El Dorado Airport and other strategic points in the city.
The reason for this impasse lies in the dissatisfaction of the recyclers’ union with national public services policies. The leaders of the protest have stated that their objective is to pressure the National Government to be formally included in the negotiation tables where cleaning rates are set in the country.

According to the spokespersons, their work is essential for environmental sustainability and they are not being fairly remunerated or taken into account in decisions that directly impact their daily livelihood.
Given the road impact that is already reaching Carrera 43, the traffic authorities have deployed an operation to try to mitigate the impact.
The TransMilenio system reported that its zonal routes have had to implement emergency detours, which has increased waiting times for users.
To avoid being trapped in congestion, drivers are recommended to take alternate routes such as Avenida La Esperanza, Avenida Américas, Calle 13 or Calle 53, while public forces monitor the progress of the march.
