Minute30.com .- A violent shooting shook Australia during a celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach, Sydney’s most popular beach. The attack, classified as a terrorist incident, has left at least 11 people dead and 29 injured.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon reported that authorities received multiple reports of gunshots around 6:47 p.m. (local time) in Archer Park, a green area of Bondi Beach, where an event attended by more than 1,000 people was being held to mark the start of Hanukkah.
The police confirmed that two attackers were neutralized and are investigating whether there may have been a third shooter.
One of the attackers is dead; while the other attacker is in police custody in critical condition and seriously injured.
Terrorism Declaration
Some 29 people were taken to various hospitals, including two police officers who were seriously injured.
Commissioner Lanyon designated the attack as a terrorist incident. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the act in a statement: “An act of perverse anti-Semitism, an act of terrorism that has struck at the heart of our country. There is no place for this vile act of violence and hatred.”
