During his speech at the XXI Inter-American Course on Democracy 2025, the Attorney General of the Nation, Gregorio Eljach Pacheco, assured that what is important and significant about the candidacies are “the proposals and content qualifications” that they provide to voters.

The statement was made by the head of the Public Ministry after questioning the “proliferation of candidates and the multiple and prolific existence of parties and movements.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, the head of the control body stated that “democracy in various parts of the world today faces persistent threats and new challenges that test institutional stability, citizen trust and the capacity of States to guarantee authentic, transparent and peaceful electoral processes.”

Precisely in these challenges, said the attorney, many things must be corrected and straightened, among them the control of the number of candidates that become “a factor of dissolution, of dispersion, which does not allow us to identify some elementary lines of orientation that each of those who aspire to be favored by the popular vote can give.”

In addition to the challenges of public order to preserve and guarantee that the elections are carried out throughout the national territory, the attorney stressed that “the spring of candidates is a weakness of the electoral system and is not benevolent for it either.”

At the end of his speech at the event promoted by the National Registry, Eljach Pacheco concluded that “more parties will not have a better democracy.”
