The National Institute of Health (INS) has just declared the national epidemiological alert after confirming that dengue in Colombia went beyond historical limits during the last year.
The figures are worrying: 123,745 people were infected by the virus transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and most painfully, 118 families lost a loved one due to complications related to this disease.
Although the number of deaths is lower than that recorded in 2024 (where there were 284 deaths), the authorities do not let their guard down, as the virus continues to circulate strongly in much of the territory.
In the last week of the year alone, more than 2,000 new infections were reported, which shows that the mosquito continues to do its thing in homes and neighborhoods.
Of all the cases recorded, 37.1% presented alarm signs and more than 1,200 people had to be treated for severe dengue, testing the capacity of hospitals in the most critical regions.

The report indicates that Santander, Meta, Córdoba, Norte de Santander, Antioquia and Cartagena are the hottest spots of the outbreak. However, cities such as Santa Marta, Huila and Boyacá have shown an increase in infections of more than 30% in recent weeks.
Despite the above, the fatality rate remains at 0.09%. The INS warned that of the 825 municipalities at risk, 70 are today above what was expected.
The call to citizens is not to relax: fumigation helps, but the real key is to eliminate breeding grounds for clean water in vases, tires and tanks.
