The death of Brayan Steven, 28, unleashed a strong wave of rejection in Cali after a confusing traffic operation recorded on December 10 in the Tequendama neighborhood.

The victim’s family assures that the case constitutes a possible abuse of authority by a traffic agent, who has already been temporarily removed from his duties while the investigations progress.

According to witnesses, the young man tried to evade a checkpoint, which led to a chase by the official.

Initial versions indicate that the agent allegedly hit the motorcyclist when he was already on the ground, injured and unable to defend himself.

A video recorded by neighbors shows the moment after the impact: the official appears talking on his cell phone, while two motorcycles were lying on the road.

The family released a recording on social networks asking for justice and denouncing that the procedure was disproportionate. His cousin, Lina Yusti, stated that Brayan was a father and husband, and reproached that “no lack of traffic justifies taking someone’s life.”

The Cali Ombudsman rejected what happened and recalled that for months it had warned about possible tragedies if structural measures were not taken against the actions of some agents.

The Ministry of Mobility, for its part, expressed condolences and assured that it will guarantee transparency in the investigation.

The event occurs in the midst of a panorama of high conflict between motorcyclists and traffic agents: so far this year, there have been nearly 70 attacks against officials in Cali.
