With an investment of more than $21,000 million, the mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, announced the comprehensive modernization of the Alfonso Galvis Duque Athletics Stadium.
This work seeks to benefit more than 50,000 people who use the stage monthly, raising its standards to international levels to strengthen local talent and consolidate the city as a benchmark for high-performance sports.
The technical intervention will be profound. The president emphasized that this is not a simple aesthetic maintenance, but rather a completely new work.
The project includes the total renovation of the 400 meters of the track with the highest quality materials, the adaptation of the launching areas and the creation of an alternate warm-up area of 150 meters.
In addition, the complex will include a playground around this alternate area, adding a recreational space for families.
This transformation is key for the region’s sports calendar, as Medellín prepares to host the Pan American Athletics Championships in June 2026.

Fico bets everything on sport: More than 50 thousand people will benefit from the remodeling of the Alfonso Galvis Duque Athletics stadium
The renovated stadium is expected to host more than 1,300 athletes from 43 countries, guaranteeing state-of-the-art facilities that include improvements to dressing rooms, bathrooms, stands and general technical equipment.
The work schedule establishes that the works will begin the week of February 16, the date on which the stadium will close its doors completely to guarantee the speed of the processes.
According to Mayor Gutiérrez, the goal is clear: the stage must be ready for its official delivery in June 2026, ensuring that Medellín has “the best athletics stadium in the country.”
This project is part of an ambitious infrastructure plan that seeks to recover more than 700 sports venues that were received in poor condition by the current administration.
With a total inventory of 1,044 spaces in the city, the Alfonso Galvis Duque leads a list of renovations that will also soon include the new velodrome, improvements to the Cincuentenario stadium and the construction of new swimming pools, fields and sports centers.
