The Mayor’s Office of Medellín reiterated the call to citizens to avoid the use of gunpowder during the Christmas celebrations, given the serious impact it implies for pets. In the first days of this season, the city already reports two unfortunate cases.

The most delicate incident is that of Lacy, a dog who died while being transferred to a veterinary center, after jumping from the eighth floor due to the panic that, apparently, the gunpowder explosions caused her.

The second corresponds to a canine that was run over, after fleeing uncontrollably when hearing gunpowder; According to the medical report, he does not have serious multiple trauma, but remains with severe stress and aggressive behavior, possibly in response to the extreme fear he suffered.

These cases show that animals, both pets and wildlife, do not need to be close to gunpowder to be affected: the noise, vibration and smell can trigger panic attacks, escapes, accidents, injuries and behavioral alterations that last for weeks or months.

“The impact of gunpowder is not only measured in burns or emergencies in people. Each explosion can mean a tragedy for animals. Avoiding gunpowder is an act of protection and responsibility with life. From the Mayor’s Office we call for gunpowder not to be used, since our wild and domestic fauna is being seriously affected and, as we saw, it has already claimed a life,” said the Undersecretary of Animal Protection and Welfare, Elizabeth Coral.

The District Administration insists that gunpowder is not a harmless tradition: it causes damage, generates suffering and takes lives. The Aburrá Valley Metropolitan Area (AMVA) and the Conservation Park also reported the first animals affected by these outbreaks, which is why a call is made for citizen responsibility in the remaining days of the holiday season and the end of the year.
