After the 5.8 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the early hours of today, December 10, 2025, at 3:27 am, and which generated alarm and numerous reports of perception throughout the Colombian territory, the Colombian Geological Service provided details.
The epicenter of the event was located in the municipality of Los Santos, Santander, and had a depth of approximately 150 kilometers.
The departments where it was felt most intensely include Santander, Antioquia, Boyacá and Cundinamarca, in addition to the city of Bogotá, with the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) receiving more than 4,000 sense reports in more than 482 municipalities.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, through its National Seismological Network, this type of activity is characteristic of the region.
Seismologist Freddy Tovar explained that the Mesa de Los Santos is known as one of the most active seismic zones on the planet, hosting what is called a “seismic nest” that releases energy daily, which explains the frequency of the tremors.
This knowledge is essential for the community to understand and be prepared for the geographical environment in which it lives.

A peculiarity of the 150-kilometer-deep earthquake is its nature, according to Tovar.
Deep seismic events like this generally do not cause surface damage, but are widely felt at great distances, he explained.
This is because the seismic energy released travels in all directions and is not completely dissipated along its path until it reaches the surface.
The SGC called for calm and preparation, reminding the community of the importance of following only information from official sources.
The expert recommended paying attention to the publications of the Colombian Geological Service and the National Risk Management Unit to obtain accurate and reliable data on seismic activity in the country.
