PSG has consolidated its dominance in world football by becoming champion of the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

In a vibrant final played at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al-Rayyan, the team led by Luis Enrique beat CR Flamengo in an agonizing penalty shootout (2-1), after ending regulation time and extra time with a 1-1 draw.

With this victory, the Parisian club closes a historic year in which it also won its first Champions League.

The match began with a dominant PSG, although marked by controversy. Just in the ninth minute, the VAR annulled a goal by Fabián Ruiz because it was considered that the ball had gone deep before the shot.

However, European insistence paid off in the 38th minute, when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia took advantage of a short rebound from goalkeeper Agustín Rossi after a cross from Desire Doue to send the ball into the back of the net and make it 1-0 before the break.

In the second half, Flamengo reacted and found parity in the 62nd minute. A foul by Marquinhos on De Arrascaeta inside the area was awarded as a penalty after the VAR review.

PSG touches the sky in Qatar: Champion of the 2025 Intercontinental Cup

The experienced Jorginho did not forgive from the eleven meters and, with his characteristic style of execution, deceived Safonov to establish the 1-1.

Despite the entry of Ousmane Dembélé in the final minutes and a very clear chance missed by Marquinhos, the scoreboard did not move, forcing a goalless overtime that led to a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout established an unexpected hero: Matvei Safonov. The Russian goalkeeper, who maintained the starting position over Lucas Chevalier, achieved a historic performance by stopping four consecutive shots by the Brazilian team.

Thanks to their reflexes, PSG sealed the 2-1 victory in the shootout, securing the intercontinental trophy and putting the finishing touch to an unforgettable 2025 for the French entity just on the eve of Qatar’s National Day.
