The tranquility of the San José de la Cima neighborhood, in Manrique, east of Medellín, was abruptly interrupted on the night of last Sunday, December 21. The situation ended in a tragedy that today mourns two families from the department of Sucre and highlights, once again, the critical situation of intolerance and domestic violence that plagues the capital of Antioquia.
It was approximately 8:42 p.m. when the alerts went off at the Medellín Polyclinic. A taxi-type vehicle arrived at the healthcare center transporting a man with a serious chest wound. Despite the doctors’ efforts to stabilize him, Cristian Rafael HB’s vital signs faded shortly after his admission.
Cristian Rafael, a native of Morroa, Sucre, lived on Calle 89 with Carrera 34, on the third floor of a building in the San José de la Cima neighborhood, Manrique. According to official reports, the man had a fatal wound in the anterior chest, caused by a sharp weapon.
The heartbreaking testimony of a witness
The reconstruction of the events was possible thanks to the rapid intervention of the quadrant patrol, which went to Manrique after the desperate call of the citizens. There, the uniformed officers interviewed a man, who was an eyewitness to the scene after the attack.

The man told the authorities that, while he was near the house, he heard heartbreaking screams coming from the third floor. Upon entering the property to verify what was happening, he found a Dantesque scene: María Camila MM, the victim’s romantic partner, was holding a sharp weapon in her hand, while Cristian Rafael was lying on the floor oozing abundant blood.
In an act of humanity, the witness, in the company of the same alleged aggressor, helped the victim and put him in a taxi from Manrique in the hope of saving his life, an objective that unfortunately was not achieved.

Capture and the thesis of self-defense
After the death was confirmed at the Polyclinic, and thanks to the direct reporting of the witness, the National Police effectively captured María Camila, a native of Corozal, Sucre.
When approached by the authorities, the woman, visibly affected, gave her version of what happened. According to her initial story, she and her spouse were chatting inside their residence when a strong Discussion broke out. The woman stated that she was being physically attacked by her romantic partner and that, in a desperate attempt to defend herself from the blows, she took the knife and injured him in the chest.
This testimony puts the case in a complex legal scenario. The Attorney General’s Office must determine if it was an aggravated homicide or if, on the contrary, the material evidence supports the thesis of legitimate defense in a context of gender violence.
María Camila was placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office. In the next few hours, a guarantee control judge must legalize his capture and continue with the process.
Cristian Rafael’s body remains in the Forensic Medicine facilities, waiting for his relatives to carry out the procedures for the transfer and funeral honors in his homeland.
