Minute30.com .- A new massacre shakes Ecuador’s prison system. The Machala prison, located in the border province of El Oro, with Peru, reported the death of 27 prisoners, in a fact that adds to the serious prison security crisis in the country.

Cause of Death and Origin of Violence

Initial investigations indicate that most of the deaths occurred due to asphyxiation. The 27 bodies were found on the third floor of the detention center. The tragedy occurred after, during the early hours of this Sunday, a fight occurred inside the prison that initially left four convicts dead and 33 injured.

The number of victims increases

Initially, the authorities had reported 21 deaths, but as the hours passed, the number of fatalities rose to 27. The Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office has begun investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the deaths and determine whether the asphyxiation was a direct consequence of the riot or other actions.

This event marks a new episode of extreme violence in Ecuador’s prisons, where disputes between criminal gangs for control of penitentiary centers are recurrent.
