The Antioquian representatives at the World Figure Skating Championships held in Beijing, China, returned to the country with outstanding results, highlighting the notable debut of two young promises.
The Colombian delegation was made up of 18 skaters, four of them assigned to the Antioquia Skating League: the World Cup winner María Paulina Pérez (Senior), and the Junior debutants Michel Upegui, Isabela Amaya and Jacobo Viera.
The pleasant surprise came from Isabela Amaya and Jacobo Viera when they achieved an impressive fourth place in the Junior Dance Couple category.
In their first World Cup event, they proved to be the best in their category in the Pan-American concert, competing against nine couples from countries with a great tradition in the sport, such as Italy, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, France and the United States.
The Antioquian couple, who this year were crowned champions in the International Artistic Series and in the Pan American Championship (both in Buenos Aires, Argentina), in addition to being national champions in the Interleague, achieved a score of 110.09.
Historic debut! Isabela Amaya and Jacobo Viera, top 5 in their first Figure Skating World Cup
They were only 87 tenths behind the Spanish couple, made up of Joan Jardi Marco and Lucía Camarillo (110.96), a duo with a renowned career, which allowed them to reach the podium.
First and second place went to the Italian couples of Matteo Di Nunzio and Mariaclaudia Parziale (135.51) and Alessandro Grossi and Carlotta Bruzzi (129.14).
Jacobo Viera also competed in the couple and individual modalities in the Junior category.
This outstanding result, added to the performance of Michel Upegui, is clear evidence of the good process and the promising generational change that is taking place in Antioquia figure skating.
