Under an unprecedented security deployment and in the midst of enormous global expectation, Nicolás Maduro Moros made his first public appearance this Monday, January 5, after his capture last weekend in Caracas.
The video that travels the world
Since early hours, an official video released by federal authorities has gone viral. In the images, a visibly altered Maduro can be seen, wearing the regulatory uniform of federal detention centers. The former president appears strongly handcuffed by his hands and feet, being escorted by agents from the DEA and the US Marshals Service when leaving the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center bound for the Federal Court in Manhattan.
Unlike his usual televised speeches, Maduro limited himself to uttering a few brief words in English (“Good night, happy new year”) upon being initially admitted to the processing facilities, according to reports from international agencies.

Hearing details
The session is scheduled for noon (local time) before Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein, in the Southern District Court of New York (500 Pearl Street). The key points of the day are:
Main positions: Narcoterrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of weapons of war.
Companions: His wife, Cilia Flores, also captured in the operation, must appear in court on similar charges.
Defense: His lawyers are expected to argue “sovereign immunity,” even though the US government does not recognize his legitimacy as head of state, citing the controversies of the 2024 election.
International reactions
While groups of Venezuelans celebrate with flags and slogans outside the court, governments allied with Maduro such as China have condemned the operation, calling it a “violation of international law.” For her part, in Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez has assumed administrative control, trying to open communication channels with Washington to stabilize the country’s energy situation.
