The Mayor’s Office of Medellín, through its Buen Comienzo program, made an emphatic call to mothers, fathers and caregivers to exercise extreme vigilance and care for early childhood girls and boys (0 to 5 years old) during the Christmas and New Year season.
Crowds, travel, alterations in routines and changes in temperature significantly increase the risks that can affect the health and safety of minors.
The director of Buen Comienzo, Diana Carmona, stressed the importance of prioritizing well-being at this time.
“We guarantee their protection and promote care every day of the year and, especially, we make a call for this Christmas season. Let us prioritize family moments, care and protection. Let us maintain the routines of our girls and boys, for example, in their feeding and sleeping moments,” said the official.
Food, hygiene and prevention: The key points
Among the essential measures, Buen Comienzo highlights reinforcing breastfeeding, even while traveling.
Regarding food, it is recommended to handle food with the utmost care, avoid exposure to heat and be cautious with the consumption of street foods. Hygiene remains vital: it is essential to guarantee the use of drinking water and ensure frequent hand washing, in addition to cleaning toys.
To prevent respiratory diseases, the entity suggests keeping spaces ventilated and preventing minors from being exposed to sudden changes in temperature or cigarette smoke.

The entity takes advantage of the season to remember the importance of reviewing and completing children’s vaccination schedules.
Finally, Buen Comienzo called to guarantee respectful treatment, free of physical punishment, and to be attentive to any change in the behavior of minors. Supervising interactions is crucial to protect children from any type of violence, especially sexual violence.
In the event of any risk or warning sign, citizens can notify Line 123. With these measures, the Mayor’s Office seeks to ensure that Christmas is one of love, care and respect for the children of Medellín.
