A strong controversy took over social networks this weekend after the senator of the Comunes party (former FARC), Sandra Ramírez, published a congratulatory message addressed to the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, on the occasion of his birthday.

What for the congresswoman was a gesture of political camaraderie, for a large part of public opinion and the Colombian opposition was interpreted as an affront to democracy, given the political situation that Venezuela is going through and the questions about the legitimacy of the Chavista regime.

“Congratulating a dictator”: the focus of criticism

The reaction was immediate. Hundreds of users and opposition figures severely questioned that a senator of the Republic, who occupies a seat resulting from a peace agreement, exalts the figure of a ruler internationally identified as a dictator.

Critics focused on the contradiction of Ramírez’s message when speaking of “democracy” and “defense of the people”, contrasting it with the reality of the Venezuelan migration crisis, the persecution of the political opposition (such as the case of María Corina Machado) and doubts about electoral transparency in the neighboring country.

Among the most recurrent comments, Internet users reminded the senator of the exodus of millions of Venezuelans fleeing the “success in work” that she celebrates, and described her position as a sign of the historical ideological affinity between the extinct FARC and Chavismo, which, according to her detractors, persists despite her transition to civilian life.
