The Mayor’s Office of Medellín, through the Women’s Secretariat, recognized 600 participants in the Decididas strategy, a process that during 2025 provided comprehensive support to 1,091 women to strengthen their economic, emotional and social autonomy.

Mayor Federico Gutiérrez highlighted the fundamental role of women in the transformation of the city: “Medellín has been brought forward by women, 30 years ago this was the most violent city in the world and those who suffered the most were the women of our city. They were left alone, raising their children or they lost them, but they moved forward despite the difficulties.”

The local leader emphasized that if women were able to get ahead alone, now with institutional support they can achieve even more.

“This is what it’s about, I’m convinced that these programs and that what the mayor’s office has to do is give you the impetus for you to make the decision. That’s why I think there can’t be a better name for this program like Decididas,” he added.

A comprehensive empowerment strategy

The Decididas strategy is part of the project to Promote Economic Autonomy for Women and is aimed at people over 18 years of age from diverse contexts, including rural women, heads of households, young people, older women, indigenous people, caregivers, recyclers, peace signers, victims of violence or armed conflict, and workers with informal jobs.

The accompaniment route was developed in three components that comprehensively strengthened the participants.

The awareness phase addressed reflection on rights, care and autonomy; The orientation stage focused on decision-making and defining the life project; and the support component offered individual and group counseling.

This last component facilitated access to employment, promoted productive initiatives and strengthened entrepreneurship, integrating training in digital, financial and administrative skills that allow women to develop their life projects with greater autonomy.

In a complementary manner, the Women’s Secretariat advised 1,455 women on sexual and reproductive rights and accompanied 3,000 in mental health promotion processes, achieving 100% of the annual goals established for 2025.

The Decididas strategy is consolidated as one of the mayor’s most important commitments to guarantee that the women of Medellín have real tools that allow them to achieve economic autonomy, strengthen their life project and overcome the barriers that they have historically faced.
