The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, delivered a forceful assessment of the security transformation that commune 5, Castilla, is experiencing. Currently, this sector is celebrating a historic figure: 47 days without a single homicide so far in 2026.
Given this scenario, the president was emphatic that the key has been the frontal combat against the gangs that operate in the area.
“We are not going to stop the fight against criminal structures. We have dealt structural blows with the help of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Police,” said Gutiérrez.
For the mayor, success in Castilla is not an isolated event, but a strategy that is replicated in other sectors such as 12 de Octubre, Aranjuez and Robledo. According to the figures provided by the president, security in Castilla shows that: motorcycle theft fell by 65%, residential theft fell by 50% and commercial theft was reduced by an impressive 70%.

Despite the optimism over the zero count of violent deaths, the president maintained a realistic stance in the face of the challenges that still persist in the territory.
Gutiérrez recognized that extortion continues to be the “headache” for merchants and residents, so his instruction is to “continue to concentrate harder” to dismantle illicit income.
“We are on the right track, but there is still a long way to go. We are tightening as it is,” concluded the mayor, reaffirming that coordination with WhatsApp networks of merchants and institutional presence will continue to be the security strategy.
