Minute30.com .- The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, spoke forcefully after the serious incidents recorded at the Atanasio Girardot Stadium, where a group of misfits prevented the awarding of Atlético Nacional as champion of the BetPlay Cup. Through his social networks, the president rejected the attacks carried out by Independiente Medellín fans and assured that there will be immediate legal consequences.
“They are not fans. They behave like criminals,” said Gutiérrez, stressing that the images of the clashes and the use of tear gas in the stands and on the field are sufficient proof of the seriousness of the events. The mayor regretted that the behavior of a few tarnished what should be a sports festival for the majority of attendees.
Gutiérrez emphasized that, under his administration, excuses based on “colors” or shirts will not be allowed. “Whoever went to the stadium to attack, destroy or generate fear, responds to the law,” he stated, making it clear that identification processes will begin to prosecute those responsible for the damages and attacks within the sports scene.

Misfit fans even pulled out knives amid the riots
The president expressed his deep disappointment at the setback that these events mean for the city, which for years has been a reference for “Soccer in Peace” in Latin America. “We have felt proud to celebrate football as a party. What a disappointment,” added the mayor, who confirmed that he is in charge of the situation coordinating with the Metropolitan Police.

Finally, it is expected that in the next few hours an extraordinary security council will be convened to define the specific sanctions for the square and the restrictions that will be applied in the next meetings, in order to guarantee that the Atanasio Girardot once again becomes a safe space for families.
