A tragedy struck this Sunday in the city of João Pessoa, in the state of Paraíba (Brazil), after a 19-year-old young man lost his life after entering without authorization the enclosure of a lioness in the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park. The incident occurred in front of dozens of visitors who could not believe what they were witnessing.
According to the first versions, the young man managed to circumvent several barriers at the zoo by climbing a wall more than six meters high and using a tree as support to descend directly into the feline’s habitat. The authorities indicated that the unauthorized entry could not be anticipated within the regular security protocols, since the park had all the barriers and protection measures in place.
Once inside the enclosure, the lioness – an 18-year-old female born in the same zoo – reacted immediately to the presence of the intruder. Part of the event was recorded in videos recorded by visitors who were near the place, where the young man is seen descending from the tree and, in a matter of seconds, being hit by the animal. Although the attack is not fully appreciated due to the facility’s infrastructure, moments of panic among those present are captured.

Zoo staff quickly intervened using smoke from fire extinguishers to separate the feline, allowing medical and police teams to access the area. However, upon arrival, the Military Police and experts from the Institute of Forensic Sciences of Paraíba confirmed that the young man had died from his injuries. The authorities are investigating the possibility that the victim went through mental health episodes, although this information has not been confirmed by his family.
The park released a statement regretting what happened and sending a message of solidarity to the young man’s loved ones. As an immediate measure, the establishment was closed to the public while the investigation that seeks to clarify the exact sequence of events continues.
Regarding the state of the animal, the administration clarified that the lioness is under veterinary evaluation due to the high level of stress to which it was subjected. She was also categorical in ruling out any type of lethal measure against the specimen, insisting that it was an instinctive reaction to a direct invasion of its space. The park’s team of specialists remains attentive to his emotional and physical recovery.
The zoo will keep its facilities closed until the official investigations are completed and any adjustments to security protocols are defined.
