The extradition to Chile of Luis Alfredo Carrillo Ortiz, known as alias ‘Gocho’, is now a fact. President Gustavo Petro formally authorized his sending to the southern country, where he will be prosecuted for his alleged participation in the crime of former Venezuelan military officer Ronald Ojeda, which occurred in February 2024.

Carrillo Ortiz, a noted member of the transnational criminal structure Tren de Aragua, remains imprisoned in La Picota prison in Bogotá. His case had generated a judicial and diplomatic dispute after Chile and Venezuela presented simultaneous extradition requests.

However, the Supreme Court of Justice had already issued a favorable opinion on October 23, concluding that the Chilean request “is in accordance with the law,” thus clearing the way for its delivery.

With the extradition to Chile, the justice of that country will be in charge of prosecuting him for the kidnapping and murder of Ojeda, an event that shocked the region and that the authorities have attributed to cells of the Aragua Train operating outside of Venezuela.

The decision of the Colombian Government leaves out Venezuela’s aspiration to try the accused in its territory, which could escalate diplomatic tensions between Bogotá, Santiago and Caracas, considering the sensitive political precedents between the three governments.

The process also puts back on the table the Aragua Train’s capacity to influence in Latin America and the regional challenges to stop its criminal networks.
