A knowledgeable judge sentenced Leonel Velásquez to 11 years in prison, after finding him responsible for the crime of aggravated violent sexual act against an 8-year-old girl, in events that occurred in a religious congregation in Cali, Valle del Cauca.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the abuse occurred on several occasions between February and March 2023, when both the aggressor and the minor attended religious meetings. During that period, Velásquez followed, intimidated and inappropriately touched the girl.
One of the most serious events occurred when the minor went out to the patio to drink water. According to the investigation, the convicted man chased her, tried to take off her clothes, covered her mouth and touched her violently, in addition to threatening to kill her parents if she screamed or revealed what happened.

Based on evidence and testimony, the Prosecutor’s Office demonstrated the criminal responsibility of the accused, which allowed the judge to issue the conviction. The decision ordered that the sentence be served in a prison and that Velásquez be disqualified from exercising public functions for the same period of the sentence.
Velásquez has been deprived of liberty since July 2023, and the sentence was final, so no additional appeal is appropriate.
