Minute30.com .- The former Minister of Finance and renowned economist Juan Camilo Restrepo Salazar attacked President Gustavo Petro after the president’s recent statements, in which he suggested that Ecopetrol “is going to go bankrupt.”
Through his social networks, Restrepo harshly questioned the head of state’s statement, describing it as irresponsible and warning about its possible economic consequences. “What is the difference between this statement and the crime of economic panic?” he wrote, referring to the possible impact of the president’s words on financial markets.
Restrepo also raised questions about the reaction of the more than 250,000 independent shareholders of Ecopetrol, as well as the international banks with which the company seeks financing, and the investors of the New York Stock Exchange, where the state oil company has its shares listed.
“How long will Petro continue speaking with such lightness and irresponsibility? Is he aware of the harm he is doing to the country with his constant stupidity?” concluded the former minister, in a message that has generated wide echo in the national political and economic debate.
So far, neither the Presidency nor Ecopetrol have officially responded to these allegations.
