Minute30.com .- August inflation in Colombia accelerated to 5.10% annually, breaking the path of deceleration that it had in July. Although the figure is lower than that recorded in the same period of the previous year, the monthly rebound has generated concern, and the DANE analysis reveals that two divisions played a leading role in this increase: Food and non-alcoholic beverages and Accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.
The annual behavior of inflation in August 2025 is largely explained by the strong increase in prices in these two divisions. The cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages, for example, registered an annual variation of 7.78%a figure that far exceeds the national average and has a direct impact on the pockets of Colombian households. Along the same lines, the cost of housing, public services and other fuels was one of the main responsible for the rise in inflation, with an annual variation of 7.87%, this being the highest annual variation.
According to DANE, the monthly variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 0.19%. Five divisions ranked above the national average. Alcoholic beverages and tobacco (0.59%), Restaurants and hotels (0.49%), Health (0.46%), Food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.45%) and Miscellaneous goods and services (0.44%) were the ones that most influenced the rise. On the other hand, the division Recreation and culture recorded the lowest monthly variation, with -0.30%.
Regarding the behavior of the prices of specific products, the rise in fresh fruits (0.06 percentage points) and the meals in table service and self-service establishments (0.04 percentage points) were the ones that contributed the most to the monthly variation of the CPI. On the other hand, the decrease in the price of electricity (-0.06 percentage points)the potatoes (-0.03 percentage points) and the tomato (-0.01 percentage points) helped contain the rise in prices.

DANE has been clear in its analysis: the rise in the CPI is a reflection of the complex economic situation that the country is experiencing, where the increase in food and housing prices has become a concern for citizens. It is expected that the economic authorities will take action on the matter so that inflation returns to the path of deceleration and thus relieves the pockets of Colombians.
