The La Picota prison in Bogotá activated a maximum alert after the prison escape of Pedro David, an inmate sentenced to 28 years in prison for kidnapping for ransom, was confirmed.

The escape occurred on the afternoon of last Sunday, December 7, while many families were lighting traditional candles.

The maneuver used by Nieves, alias ‘Garavato’, was the well-known ‘cambiazo’. A visitor, identified as Alexander, entered the prison to impersonate the inmate, allowing the convict to leave the prison without being detected at the exit.

Security personnel detected the irregularity minutes later, which forced a search operation coordinated by Inpec, the Judicial Police and the Prosecutor’s Office to be launched. Alexander, the visitor who was left inside the prison, was immediately detained and will be prosecuted for his alleged participation in the events.

A record that increases concern

Pedro David is no ordinary inmate. His judicial record intensifies the authorities’ concern, since he is considered a highly dangerous inmate with a history of extortion.

In 2023, Nieves had already attracted attention for an unusual case: he was captured just as he regained his freedom, accused of having planned from his own cell the kidnapping of a businessman in Sáchica, Boyacá, in order to commit a million-dollar theft. The victim was tied up, threatened and stripped of property for nearly nine hours.

The authorities continue to actively search for the fugitive, remembering that his history makes him an investigative priority in this time of increased flow of visits to penitentiary centers.
