Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio assured that Colombia is prepared to exercise its right to defense if aggression from the United States were to occur, amid the growing diplomatic tension following President Donald Trump’s recent statements against the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro.
The head of diplomacy insisted that the country will act in accordance with international law and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
In that sense, he stressed that Colombia has Military Forces trained and prepared to respond to any eventuality, under the command of the President of the Republic.
“Regarding the possibility of aggression against our country by the United States, we have also been clear and the defense of our sovereignty is in the international order. For that we have a very trained, very prepared army, an army under the command of the head of state, who is President Gustavo Petro, who will have to defend our populations if that case were to occur,” said the chancellor, while clarifying that the Government hopes that this scenario does not materialize.

Villavicencio insisted on the need to comply with international law and respect the democratic principles that govern relations between States.
“We continue to insist that international law must be complied with, the principles of democracy must be respected and also the principles that have been created in the international order, contained in the Charter of the United Nations,” Indian.
The foreign minister’s statements come after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, suggested the possibility of a US mission in Colombia, amid harsh accusations against President Petro. These statements raised the tone of the bilateral relationship and generated reactions from different sectors of the Colombian Government.
The Government of Colombia presented a formal note of protest to the United States for what it considers direct “threats” from the North American president against national sovereignty, an unprecedented event in recent diplomatic relations between both countries.
Petro’s response
In response to these statements, President Gustavo Petro rejected what he described as threats against national sovereignty and called for mobilizations throughout the country.
Through his social networks, the president called on citizens to demonstrate in defense of Colombia and democratic institutions, and assured that he will not accept foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.
With these statements, the Colombian Government reaffirms its position of defense of national sovereignty, while insisting on respect for diplomatic channels and the norms of international law.
