President Gustavo Petro is already in Washington to meet his White House appointment with his counterpart Donald Trump.
From the embassy in Washington, Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio described this visit as a necessary “turning point.” The objective is to leave behind the crossed statements where Trump came to brand Petro as a “drug trafficking leader.”
To counter this narrative, the Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, presented forceful figures that will be the axis of the unpredictable talk: the seizure of more than 3,000 tons of cocaine and base paste during the current Government, a blow that the official valued at more than $90 billion dollars.

For his part, Ambassador Daniel García-Peña recognized that the meeting is unpredictable in nature, given the deep ideological and personal differences between both leaders.
However, he highlighted that the Trump administration has provided all the guarantees to receive the Colombian head of state, who had initially been left without an entry permit after his controversial speech at the UN. It was a direct phone call between the two that finally unraveled the diplomatic knot, allowing Petro to present his progress on social and economic issues before the Oval Office today.
The four-day agenda will not be limited to face-to-face with Trump. Petro will also seek support in the United States Congress, visit the OAS headquarters and give a lecture at Georgetown University on climate change.
Although it has not been confirmed whether there will be a joint press conference, the Colombian president will give his own statements at the end of the day.
