A delegation of 19 Colombian skaters has traveled to Mérida, Mexico, to participate in two important events: the Third Latin American Regional and the First Colombian National Figure Skating Championship on Ice.
This contest will take place from Friday, October 31 to Sunday, November 2 and marks the formal beginning of the national competitive process in this new sporting modality for the country.
Although Colombia already had an international presence in Costa Rica last August, this championship is crucial for the consolidation of ice sports at the national level.
The Colombian delegation presents a balance between experience and youth. Of the 19 athletes, eight have previously competed in Costa Rica, while another eight will experience their baptism on the ice in an international competition.
The group is complemented by three skaters who already have previous experience on this surface, providing experience to the team.
The athletes represent six skating leagues and their respective clubs: Ay Sport (Cesar), Patín Caribe (Sucre), Codecar (Bolívar), Skating Club Boston (Bogotá), Pro Skate (Santander) and Alcaravanes (Casanare).
All skaters will compete in the freestyle category. Within the delegation, five youth skaters at the Teens level stand out, considered the most advanced group, and who will perform two programs each.

In addition to the individual competitions, the public present at the inauguration will be able to enjoy a couple’s exhibition starring the Colombians Daniela Taborda and Ricardo Plaza, a format that will not have official competition on this occasion, but that will serve to show the artistic potential of the country in this discipline.
As a fundamental part of their preparation, the Colombian skaters had exclusive training with the renowned Mexican Olympic skater Donovan Carrillo and his coach.
Carrillo, who has achieved international milestones such as outstanding positions in world championships and medals in International Skating Union (ISU) competitions, shared valuable technical and sporting knowledge with the delegation.
This session significantly raised the level of readiness of national athletes for competitive challenges.
This historic First Colombian National Figure Skating Figure Skating event in Mérida, Mexico, represents much more than a simple competition.
It symbolizes a fundamental step in the consolidation of ice sports in the country and, more importantly, the firm commitment to continue with the dream of taking Colombia to the prestigious international competitions of this elegant and demanding discipline.
The path to the elite of figure skating is just beginning for these 19 pioneers.
