The security of TransMilenio was once again in evidence after a violent episode recorded on the Portal 20 de Julio, where a group of coworkers carried out an attack with sharp objects against the system’s guards.

The events were captured in several videos posted on social networks, in which a man can be seen jumping the turnstiles to evade payment and, when required by the anti-college team, he draws a knife to threaten the security personnel.

In a matter of seconds, the scene went from a common offense to a collective confrontation: dozens of people took the opportunity to sneak in en masse, while some tried to prevent the work of the guards, who were outnumbered and physically attacked.

The vice president of the Bogotá Council, Juan David Quintero, publicly denounced the incident and described the attackers as “brazen sneaks” who, he said, even tried to ‘murder’ the officials in charge of protecting the system.

TransMilenio SA rejected the acts of violence and confirmed that the attack occurred during routine control and surveillance tasks to guarantee order within the portal.

The Police Mass Transportation Command intervened and managed to detain the alleged attackers, who would be minors according to the first official versions.

The episode reopens the debate on the overwhelming phenomenon of colados in Bogotá, a problem that generates economic losses, conflicts with security personnel and constant risks for users of the massive system. The authorities are working to fully identify those responsible to advance sanctioning and criminal processes.
