An unprecedented seizure in Buenaventura marked a milestone in the fight against drug trafficking in Colombia, after the Police seized 13.8 tons of cocaine hidden in a container that had the Netherlands as its final destination.

According to the Minister of Defense, Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez, this is the largest seizure recorded in the last ten years and shows the pressure that the State is exerting on the criminal economies that operate from the Colombian Pacific.

“This result is the largest in the last 10 years. It confirms that in Colombia we fight drug trafficking tirelessly and that crime is losing ground in the face of the action of the Public Force,” the minister stated through his official channels.

The shipment was mixed with natural gypsum, a modality used by structures operating in Buenaventura to try to circumvent port controls. According to Sánchez, the economic blow for these organizations is monumental.

“More than USD 383 million remained unfed by criminal finances,” stood out.

In addition to the financial impact, the minister highlighted the social dimension of the operation. “With this operation we prevented more than $134 million of doses from reaching the streets of consumer countries”added Sánchez, highlighting the damage that was avoided with the confiscation.

The minister attributed the success to the coordination of the security forces: “This result is the product of the determination, professionalism and bravery of our police and intelligence units. To them, my gratitude and recognition.”

Finally, Sánchez reiterated that the Government maintains its offensive against illegal economies: “Security and tranquility are priorities. This is one more step in the frontal fight against the criminal economies that have caused so much damage. We do not let our guard down. We continue to advance.”
