In the midst of the negotiations to define the increase in the minimum wage for 2026, the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT) in Boyacá has launched a proposal that raises the ceiling of the discussion: a salary that rises to $2,000,000 pesos.

The proposal, promoted by William Ruiz, president of the CUT in Boyacá, suggests that the increase should be between 30% and 36%, with the aim of “really” compensating for the loss of purchasing power that Colombian workers have suffered.

If finalized, the salary would go from the current figure of $1,423,500 COP to $2,000,000 COP, a level that business associations have already described as “very complex to address.”

Offset Cost of Living and GDP

The union leader argued that, despite the growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), this is not reflected in better income for workers. «These increases have been important, but still insufficient to cover the basic needs of families. The goal must be a decent salary, which reflects the true economic situation of Colombian households,” said Ruiz.

However, the CUT representative in Boyacá also showed willingness to negotiate. He clarified that if the dialogue demands it, they would be willing to revise the figure to a lower range, between 22% and 24%.

The CUT Boyacá proposal joins the debate that will define the salary of millions of Colombians for next year, and maintains the willingness of the workers sector to dialogue with the Government and businessmen at the Salary Concertation Table.
