The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, presented a new pedagogical strategy aimed at early childhood that seeks to strengthen the learning of a second language from an early age.
Through the Buen Comienzo program and the Medellínglish bet, the Medellín mayor’s office will deliver children’s books in English to all girls and boys enrolled in the different modalities of the program.
This is pedagogical material designed especially for early childhood, which incorporates auditory content accessible through QR codes, allowing fathers, mothers and caregivers to accompany the reading process in both Spanish and English.
The initiative seeks to promote learning through play, creativity and family interaction, strengthening emotional ties while developing basic language skills.
“The children get a pedagogical package with books in English that include codes to access the audio. Thus, families can practice throughout the month, accompany the reading and strengthen the bond between parents and children”explained Mayor Federico Gutiérrez.

Additionally, during the Christmas and New Year break, all girls, boys, pregnant and lactating women linked to the program will receive food packages, in order to ensure nutritional continuity at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026. This year alone, the program has distributed more than 228,000 food packages in the city.
Thanks to these strategies and permanent nutritional monitoring, Medellín managed to reduce the rate of acute childhood malnutrition from 1.1% to 0.4%, through programs such as Buen Comienzo 365 and Nutrir para Heal, Sanar para Crecer.
This latest initiative will keep its telephone line 604 385 5555, extension 9896, enabled to report cases of child malnutrition or low weight in pregnant and lactating women.
Finally, the mayor announced that the city is making progress in the construction of four new kindergartens and in the adaptation of all the physical headquarters of the program. “Nothing is more important than childhood. We are going to continue taking care of it,” he concluded.
